Women's Basketball Upends Del Val

MADISON, N.J. (January 21, 2017) – Freshman Kendrea Williams tallied 20 points to lead the FDU women's basketball team to a 69-56 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday.

The Devils picked up their 13th straight win, moving to 15-2 and 6-0 in the MAC Freedom while the Aggies fell to 7-10, 3-3 in conference.

Neither team was able to pull away in the opening 10 minutes, as no side grabbed more than four point edge. With time winding down in the frame, Ashley Smink hit a trey to put the Aggies down one heading into the second. As Delaware Valley took a 23-22 lead, a 10-0 Devil run put the hosts ahead for good. Williams and junior Michaela Piserchia combined for all 10 points during the spurt. A jumper by Jennah Roman put FDU ahead by 12, their largest lead of the opening half, but the Aggies closed out with four straight tallies to pull within eight at the break.

Del Val would get as close as three points midway through the third stanza, but Williams and sophomore Mariah Martinez hit from behind the arc to put the Devils back up nine. An Aggie layup with 27 seconds remaining sent the gap to seven points heading into the final frame.

A layup and free throw by Morgan Mitchell brought the contest back to a six-point game, but Williams banged home a three and senior Rachel Groom hit a layup to bring back the double-digit lead. Groom would then connect on back-to-back layups to give FDU a 14-point lead to stop the comeback.

Senior Alyssa McDonough notched another double-double, her third in the last four games, totaling 17 points and 13 rebounds. Groom narrowly missed a double-double, scoring nine points and hauling in 10 rebounds. Martinez knocked down both of her attempts from behind the arc, while also grabbing six boards.

The Devils will return home Wednesday, hosting Manhattanville at 6 p.m.
