ST. DAVIDS, PA. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's basketball team took advantage of second chance points to edge out Eastern University, 70-67, in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom matchup in St. Davids, Pa.
The Devils continued their 12-game winning streak and improved to 14-2 on the season and 5-0 in the MAC Freedom as the Eagles fell to 11-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
Senior
Rachel Groom led the charge with a double-double, garnering 14 points and 17 rebounds. Classmate
Alyssa McDonough dominated the court with a game-high 30 points to go along with eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals in a 9-for-13 performance.
The Eagles matched FDU-Florham for most of the game but the Devils outscored their opponent by 10 points in the second quarter to make the difference early on. Freshman
Kendrea Williams put up two three-pointers and Groom added four layups in the second quarter to help put the FDU-Florham ahead, 37-26, at half time.
Williams finished the night with 17 points including three from behind the arc. Sophomore
Raven Dowling was a noticeable play maker in the contest, making four steals and contributing six assists in the effort.
Eastern never let up, tying the Devils' 17 points in the third quarter and outscoring FDU-Florham, 24-16, in the final quarter. Still, it wasn't enough as the Devils were able to hold on to their early lead and grab the win to remain undefeated in the conference.
Up next, the Devils return home to host Delaware Valley University on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. in the Ferguson Recreation Center.
