MADISON, N.J. (January 14, 2017) – Seniors
Alyssa McDonough and
Rachel Groom recorded double-doubles to lead the FDU women's basketball team to an 83-51 win over DeSales on Saturday.
When asked about his team's performance, Head Coach
Marc Mitchell said, "We are who we thought we were."
The Devils cruised to their 11
th straight victory, moving to 13-2 and remaining a perfect 4-0 in MAC Freedom action. DeSales fell to 11-3, 3-1 in the MAC. McDonough narrowly missed a triple-double, tallying 19 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists, while Groom had 13 points, 10 boards and three steals.
A layup by Morgan McCollian brought the Bulldogs lead to 8-6, but FDU responded with three straight to take the lead for good. A free throw cut the Devils lead back down to five, but 11-0 spurt closed out the opening quarter. DeSales went cold from the field, failing to score a point over a near-five minute stretch between the first and second period. DSU went 6-of-30 from the field in the first half, including 1-of-10 from three.
FDU came roaring out of the gate in the third, scoring the first seven markers of the frame. It was more of the same in the fourth, as freshman
Cayla Staggers and junior
Michaela Piserchia each hit layups before freshman
Kendrea Williams buried a corner trey, all before DeSales could score. Even though the Bulldogs forced 12 Devils turnovers in the half, the damage had been done and they were unable to make the comeback
Staggers had a career-high 11 points to go along with four rebounds, while Piserchia contributed a pair of blocks off the bench. McCollian led DeSales with 13 points.
The Devils hit the road on Wednesday, taking on Eastern at 6 p.m.
