Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw with Ramapo

MADISON, N.J. – Behind freshman Lindsey Scamozzino's first collegiate goal, the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's soccer team battled Ramapo College to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Robert T. Shields Field.

For the second time in their first three games, the Devils (1-0-2) played 110 minutes and earned a tie.

FDU-Florham senior goalkeeper Annie George made six stops, including a fearless block from point-black range in the final minutes of regulation.

The statsheet was nearly even across the board with the exception of corner kicks, where the Devils earned a commanding 8-1 advantage. Ramapo narrowly outshot the Devils 13-12 in the contest including 7-5 in on-target tries.

Following a scoreless first half of action, Scarmozzino broke through with the game's first scoreat the 61:55 mark. The first-year forward received a flawless cross from Kristen Fila directly in front of the Ramapo goalkeeper and promptly headed it in for a 1-0 Devils' lead. Fila served up the long entry pass from the right sideline, lofted it into the crowded goal box and Scarmozzino headed the ball with authority.

With 2:55 to go, Ramapo's Gabrielle Gentilucci corralled a ball directly in front of the Devils' goal and quickly turned and fired – only to find George alertly anticipating the shot attempt. George sprung to her right and punched away the game-tying attempt to preserve the one-goal lead.

As the 90th minute approached, it appeared as if Scarmozzino's goal would prove to be the game winner. But Ramapo's Michaela Knoblock came through with the equalizer at the 87:49 mark of the match. Gentilucci lofted a high-bouncing ball toward the Devils' net and as George charged, Knoblock stepped in and redirected it off of an FDU-Florham defender and across the goal line.

Despite a combined eight shot attempts, neither team managed a quality scoring chance across the two 10-minute extra periods. Scarmozzino fired a game-high four shots, while Knoblock led the Roadrunners with three in the contest.

The Devils return to the road for their next contest when they travel to Kean University this Wednesday, September 7 to take on the Cougars at 7 p.m.
