Men's soccer plays to 0-0 Double Overtime draw

MADISON, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham men's soccer team battled to a hard-fought 0-0, double overtime draw against Arcadia University, on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Robert T. Shields Field.

FDU-Florham junior goalkeeper JT Bretschneider made a number of key stops in the second half to keep the score level.

The Devils (2-4-3) and Knights (5-2-1) were unable to muster anything going forward in the first half, but both pushed for goals in the second as the game opened up. Chances for both sides were met by nearly instantaneous responses.

With 35 minutes remaining in the second half, Arcadia freshman defender Kyle Walters received the ball in the box, turned, shot and beat the keeper only for FDU-Florham senior defender Robbie Bonjione to clear the ball off the line.

Two minutes later, FDU-Florham senior midfielder George Batista received a pass from fellow senior Connor McIntyre and lifted the ball towards the top left corner, only to have Arcadia junior goalkeeper Chris Watson tip the ball over the bar.

With 30 to play, Arcadia freshman midfielder Shade Foreman played the ball across the defense from the right wing to teammate and forward John Behr, who shot the ball back across the face of goal. Bretschneider got a foot to the shot, sending ball inches wide.

Bretschneider made another crucial save four minutes later after a penalty was called on an FDU-Florham defender. Arcadia junior forward Bradley McKim stepped up and went left, but the keeper got a finger to it, sending the ensuing deflection off of the post and into his arms.

In overtime, FDU-Florham senior midfielder AJ Carnevale had the only chance in either of the extra periods. The captain picked up the ball outside the Arcadia penalty area and slid between three defenders but was unable to round the keeper, who made a fine save to keep the score at one a piece.

The Devils open conference play next Saturday, Oct. 1, as they host the bulldogs of DeSales University at 3 p.m.
