Women's Soccer Battles NJCU to Scoreless Draw in Season Opener

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's soccer team played New Jersey City University to a 0-0 draw in the 2016 season opener at Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Devils (0-0-1) outshot the Gothic Knights (0-0-1)16-13 in the contest but were unable to break through with a goal.

Senior goalkeeper and team co-captain Annie George blanked NJCU by making five stops in goal for FDU-Florham. George turned away the home team for the full 90 minutes in her 2016 debut.

Fellow senior captain Brittni Calleo led the charge offensively for the Devils with six shot attempts (four on goal) on the afternoon.

NJCU netminder Paula Viana matched George by also pitching a shutout with seven saves in the contest.

The Gothic Knights nearly broke the tie in the 70th minute but Mallensy Vargas' shot ricocheted off the crossbar and the game remained deadlocked at 0-0. Vargas attempted a game-high seven shots but only one found its way on target.

In regulation, the Devils' best scoring opportunity came in the 78th minute, when senior midfielder Ashley Granato fired a deflecting shot toward goal but Viana backpedaled to the net to defend the goal line and keep the game scoreless.

Kristen Fila earned the Devils' first chance in the first extra time period in the97th minute. Fila found space near midfield and charged toward the NJCU box but her long shot attempt sailed high over the crossbar.

Minutes later, a corner kick found Calleo in front of the net but again Viana was up to task and well-positioned to turn away the threat.

In the final frame, each team fired two shots that failed to reach the goalkeeper.

FDU-Florham returns to Madison for back-to-back games at Robert T. Shields Field this weekend. In Saturday's home opener the Devils battle Brooklyn College at 1 p.m. before hosting Ramapo College on Sunday at 4 p.m.
