Softball Advances to Conference Tournament Championship Game

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – With a 7-5 victory over the King's College Monarchs, the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham softball team was able to advance to the MAC Freedom Tournament Championship Game on Saturday afternoon.

In a win-or-go-home game, the Devils received a strong pitching performance from senior Sydney Worek, who struck out six batters and only allowed three runs in six innings of work.

At the plate, three different batters for the Devils recorded a multi-hit game. Sophomores Marlena Bevilacqua and Rebecca DeCarlo each picked up a pair, while freshman Courtney Rohde knocked in two and tallied two hits.

It did not take long for FDU-Florham to get on the board and following back-to-back singles by Paige Lillie and Nikki Caruso, sophomore Taylor Torre brought them both in to score on a two-RBI double to left-center.

With two outs in the inning and Torre sitting on second, Rohde came up and shot an RBI single up the middle to give the Devils an early 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Monarchs cut the deficit to two on a sacrifice fly by Amber Saylor. However, the Devils added to their lead in the bottom of the third when Torre scored on a two-out double to center field by Rohde.

The bats continued to rumble for the Devils and DeCarlo and Jaclyn Herrington hit two consecutive singles to extend the lead to four.

In the fourth, Bevilacqua singled into right and stole both second and third before coming in to score on a Caruso sacrifice fly to left field.

After the Monarchs plated their second run of the afternoon in the fifth, the Devils responded with a Bevilacqua RBI single into right field to put FDU-Florham up 7-2.

King's worked tirelessly to chip into the Devils' lead but despite scoring three more runs in the final two innings of play, FDU-Florham was able to grab the 7-5 victory and advance to the conference tournament championship game.
