WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – In the MAC Freedom Tournament Championship Game the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham softball team was defeated 3-0 by the top-seeded Manhattanville College Valiants on Saturday afternoon.
This was the second time in two days that these two teams were pinned against one another and the Valiants got the best of the Devils in both games, knocking them out of the conference tournament.
Sophomore pitcher Audrie Thomas got the start for the Devils and she went three innings, allowing two earned runs, while striking out two. Senior Sydney Worek relieved Thomas in the fourth and did not give up a run and only surrendered one hit.
Sophomore Michelle Mangini was the lone Devils' batter to record a multi-hit game and was responsible for two of the team's six hits with a pair of doubles. FDU-Florham struggled to get much offense against the Valiants' ace, Alycia Feeney, who pitched a scoreless seven innings.
The Valiants got to Thomas early in the first after Sophia Chapelone singled to lead off the inning and then came around to score on an Alicia Marino RBI single through the left side. Manhattanville tacked on another run before the inning came to a close once Evonne Torres bounced into a fielder's choice.
In the third inning, Laurel Coito came up to bat for the Valiants and hit a solo home run over the fence in left field to extend the Manhattanville lead to three.
The Devils best scoring opportunity came in the top half of the fifth when Jaclyn Herrington singled up the middle and Mangini rifled her second double of the afternoon into left field. However, the Valiants were able to successfully work out of the jam, denying a run to cross the plate.
Manhattanville hung on to its three-run lead and claimed the win in the championship game for the second time in three years.
