Women's Lacrosse Sails Past SUNY Poly in NCAA Tournament First Round

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's lacrosse team raced past the SUNY Polytechnical Institute for an 11-7 victory on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

With the win, the Devils (14-6) advance to tomorrow's second round to take on host No. 5 Middlebury College (17-1) at 1 p.m.

FDU-Florham overcame an early 3-0 deficit by scoring 11-unanswered goals to take control and put the game out of reach.

The Devils' lone senior and team captain, Brianna Capobianco set the tone for the Devils with a hat trick in the victory. Junior midfielder Brittni Calleo, who registered the Devils' first two goals, was one of three Devils to tally two scores on the afternoon.

Junior attack Laura Cannillo, who is known for her offensive contributions, provided the Devils (14-6) a huge lift with her defense by causing four turnovers to go along with three groundballs and two assists.

On the win head coach Adrienne Carr said, "I am proud of the team for its tremendous effort today and it was great to receive contributions from several different players. We are excited about the win but know we have to play even better tomorrow with a tough opponent awaiting us in the second round."

The Wildcats (13-4) struck first when Meghan Serota earned a free position attempt just 56 seconds into play, which she snuck past FDU-Florham goalkeeper Megan Nemeth. Then, Mariana Ames netted a pair of goals one minute apart to give SUNY Poly a 3-0 lead at the 24:01 mark.

Following a timeout by coach Carr, the Devils got on the board as Calleo took her defender one-on-one and drove to the net for the team's first score. The junior midfielder struck again five minutes later when she fired a shot that ricocheted off the SUNY Poly goalie and a defender before eventually trickling over the goal line.

Less than a minute later, Capobianco pulled the Devils even by burying a great feed from Cannillo. The Devils then went in front for good at the 11:12 mark when Frances Maggio took advantage of a woman-up opportunity to net the fourth goal.

Leading 5-3 with 40 seconds to go in the first stanza,  Joelle Manganella lofted a high pass to Brienna Reasoner in front of the net and Reasoner immediately slammed it down past the Wildcats' netminder, which gave the Devils a 6-3 lead at the break.

The Devils wasted no time continuing their momentum as Cassidy Vastano took a pass from Calleo and promptly deposited it into the back of the net just 24 seconds into the second half.

The trend continued as the Devils tacked on with four more goals, including a fantastic finish by Capobianco. The senior attack corralled a pass that appeared destined to sail over her head and swiftly weaved past the Wildcats' defense before tallying the ninth goal of the afternoon.

With most of the Devils' starters resting, SUNY Poly snapped the draught and scored the game's final four goals before the final horn sounded.

Nemeth only needed to make five saves as the Devils dominated possession and outshot the Wildcats 30-14 in the contest.

This is the second-straight NCAA Tournament Second Round appearance for the Devils, who topped Cabrini College 12-5 in last year's first round.
