Devils Fantastic Season Concludes in NCAA Tournament Second Round

MIDDLEBURY, VT – Despite an impressive seven goals in the second half, the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's lacrosse team was unable to climb out of an early deficit and ultimately fell 12-7 to the no. 5-ranked Middlebury College Panthers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Kohn Field.

The Devils (14-7) fell behind early in the first half but finished strong and received a lot of contributions from several different players. Leading the charge on the offensive end was junior Brienna Reasoner and sophomore Caitlyn Damon, who each scored a pair of goals in the loss to the Panthers (18-1).

Reasoner also had a solid defensive effort by causing four turnovers and recording six ground balls. Meanwhile, freshman Megan Nemeth closed out her first season for the Devils by tallying seven saves.

The game swayed heavily in favor of the Panthers at the start following a lengthy 12-0 run that spanned 38 minutes. However, despite falling behind early, the Devils did not let down and worked tirelessly to cut into the large deficit.

With 18 minutes to go in the game, Frances Maggio had the ball and spun past two defenders. As she made a move towards the net, she drew contact in the critical scoring area and was awarded a free position shot. The junior attack reared back and once the whistle sounded, she fired the ball into the net for the first FDU-Florham score of the afternoon.

Several minutes later, Reasoner caused a turnover, picked up the ball and sprinted down the field. The Devils worked the ball around to one another before it landed back in Reasoner's stick and she charged through a swarm of defenders and scored.

Just over a minute after the Reasoner goal, senior Brianna Capobianco was fouled and awarded a free position shot. Shaken up from the foul, Capobianco was unable to remain in the game. The Devils turned to Damon to take the shot and she capitalized by bouncing it past the Panthers' goalkeeper.

The run continued for the Devils and following back-to-back free position scores by junior Joelle Manganella and Damon, the deficit was trimmed to seven.

With the two-minute mark looming, FDU-Florham wasted no time on the offensive end. Following another Reasoner caused turnover, the Devils had the ball and found junior Brittni Calleo in the critical scoring area. A foul was committed by a Panthers' defender and Calleo connected on a free position shot.

Before time expired, the Devils were able to get one final score on the afternoon once Reasoner reared back and rifled a shot into the back of the net to cap off a 7-0 run.

It was a successful season for the Devils, who competed in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. In the two NCAA Tournament appearances, FDU-Florham has racked up a pair of wins and will return to the field in 2017 with a strong veteran core.
