ST. DAVID's, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham softball team came out on top 7-4 in game one of a doubleheader series with Eastern University but the Eagles (7-13, 2-4 MAC Freedom) bested the Devils (7-9, 3-3 MAC Freedom) in game two, 16-14, on Tuesday afternoon.
Game 1:
Five different batters for the Devils recorded a multi-hit game against the Eagles in the opening game of the series.
Leading the offensive brigade was sophomore Rebecca DeCarlo and senior Jaclyn Herrington. DeCarlo went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, while Herrington batted 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Wynne McCann, Nikki Caruso and Taylor Torre also each added a pair of hits and combined to score three runs.
Meanwhile Sydney Worek dominated on the mound, allowing just two earned runs and fanning a career-high 12 batters in a complete game.
The Devils were first to get in the scoring column when they had the bases loaded in the top half of the third and a costly error by an Eagles' defender caused a run to score.
In the fourth, Torre knocked a one-out double into center field and came around to score on a Courtney Rhode RBI single on the next at-bat. Following a DeCarlo single, Herrington came up and notched an RBI single to put the Devils up by three runs.
FDU-Florham plated another run in the fifth after Caruso scored on an RBI double from McCann. After adding another run in the sixth, the Devils had extended their lead to five.
The Eagles cut the deficit to two after plating three runs in the bottom half of the sixth, but the Devils managed to get another run across in the seventh after a fielding error by Eastern.
Eastern put one more run on the board in the final half inning of play but Worek was able to close out the game and grab the 7-4 victory for FDU-Florham.
Game 2:
The second game of the doubleheader series was a high-scoring affair that featured a combined 30 runs scored between the two teams.
Caruso went 2-for-4 with three runs scored while Rhode added two hits with two runs scored and two RBIs. McCann notched two hits on the afternoon with two RBIs as well.
After one inning of play the Eagles were holding on to a one-run lead. However, the lead was quickly erased when the Devils offensive erupted in the top half of the second.
DeCarlo kicked things off with a double to left field and following an error by the Eagles' defense on the ensuing at-bat she was able to come around to score. Junior Jacquelyn Tartaglia then came up and knocked in another run on an RBI single.
The Devils loaded the bases up with one out and McCann came up and blasted a two-RBI single into left field to extend the FDU-Florham lead to three. One more run crossed the plate for the Devils in the second to cap off the five-run inning.
In the fourth the Devils did some more damage and pieced together three runs, all with two outs to take a 10-3 lead.
The Devils' large lead grew to nine in the sixth after sophomore Michelle Mangini rifled an RBI double into left field following back-to-back singles from Rohde and DeCarlo. Tartaglia drove in another run on a sacrifice fly in the inning.
As things looked to weigh heavily in favor of FDU-Florham, the Eagles offense exploded for 12 runs in the bottom half of the sixth and Eastern now controlled the lead.
In the final inning of play the Devils had two runners on following two consecutive singles from Caruso and McCann. Torre hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Caruso but the game came to a close on the following at-bat and the Eagles recorded the victory.
The Devils will return to Madison for a MAC Freedom doubleheader series with Misericordia University on Saturday, April 9 with game one slated for 1:00 p.m.
