McCann Breaks RBI Record as Softball Sweeps Cougars

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham softball team combined to hit seven homers in a pair of MAC Freedom wins over the Misericordia University Cougars, 8-3 and 9-5, on Saturday afternoon at McManus Field.

Senior catcher Wynne McCann tallied an RBI in each game and is now the program's all-time leader in runs batted in with 111 across her four seasons with the Devils.

Game 1:

In the opening game of the series senior Sydney Worek got the start on the mound and she was electric, striking out a career-best 13 batters in the 8-3 win over the Cougars.

Worek got a lead to work with in the bottom half of the first when fellow senior Nikki Caruso blasted a two-run home run to put the Devils up by two runs.

In the third inning Paige Lilli shot a double into right-center and two batters later she came around to score on a Wynne McCann RBI single into center. Following a Taylor Torre walk, Courtney Rohde came up and sent the ball over the right field fence for a three-run shot to extend the Devils' lead to six runs.

The Cougars' offense was able to muster three runs in the top half of the fourth off of Worek, but she was able to maintain her composure and shut down their bats the rest of the way.

As the Devils' lead remained intact, Lillie recorded her second hit of the game when she singled through the left side of the infield. Two batters later McCann came up and hit a double to deep right-center. With two runners on and two outs, the Cougars' defense committed a costly error and the two runs scored to give FDU-Florham an 8-3 lead.

Misericordia managed to get two batters on base in the final inning of play but Worek successfully worked out of the jam and the Devils took game 1 of the series.

Game 2:

The Devils continued to hit the ball well and there was an explosion of power in the second game of the series as FDU-Florham (9-9, 5-3 MAC Freedom) hit five home runs in the 9-5 win over Misericordia (16-10, 5-3 MAC Freedom).

Lillie went 3-for-4 in the game with a pair of runs scored and three RBIs. Meanwhile, Caruso and McCann each notched two hits and combined to score three runs and tally three RBIs.

It did not take long for the Devils get on the board as Caruso recorded her second home run of the afternoon to put FDU-Florham up by a run in the opening inning of play. The very next batter was McCann and she followed in pursuit with a home run of her own. The McCann solo shot made her the all-time career RBI leader at FDU-Florham.

The Cougars plated a run in the second inning to cut the deficit to a single run and the game remained close until the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Lillie stepped up and rifled a shot to the left side of the field for a two-RBI double and the Devils grabbed a 5-1 lead.

Once again though, the Misericordia offense brought the game within a run following an RBI double from Whitney Ellenberg and a two-run home run by Melissa Parker in the top half of the fifth.

In the bottom half of the inning McCann led things off with a single to center and she came around to score on a Taylor Torre two-run home run over the left field fence.

The Devils lead grew to five in the sixth inning when Lillie and Caruso blasted back-to-back home runs.

A single run was scored in the final inning of play by the Cougars but the Devils were able to walk away with the 9-5 MAC Freedom victory.

The Devils will be back in action on Wednesday, April 13 as they play host to Drew University for a doubleheader series slated for 3 p.m.
