Baseball Eliminated from Postseason Contention by Monarchs

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team's late-season push for a postseason berth came to an end on Friday, as the Devils dropped a crucial MAC Freedom contest 10-2 at King's College at Lipo Field.

The Devils (14-19-1, 7-12) entered Friday's contest with the Monarchs (22-12, 10-9) knowing that they needed to sweep this final-weekend series in order to clinch the No. 4 seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament but saw those postseason aspirations dashed in game one.

The Monarchs escaped a first-inning jam and then put four runs on the board in the home half of the inning as they locked up the final spot in this year's conference tournament.

Andrew Hille took the loss for the Devils allowing five runs on six hits and four walks in his four innings of work, while Andrew Fischer earned the victory for the Monarchs by tossing seven innings of two-run baseball.

The Devils' afternoon began with a flurry as Kevin Sinclair and Vinny Bonaccorso singled and Frankie Tassielli walked, which loaded the bases with nobody out. However, Fisher buckled down and managed to escape unscathed by inducing a fly out and an inning-ending 5-2-3 double play, which kept the Devils off the board.

King's counterpunched in the bottom of the first with four runs on four hits.  Chris Rebar, Bruce Breithaupt, and  Sean Padden each delivered run-scoring hits for the Monarchs in the frame.

In the top of the second, the Devils again found themselves in prime scoring position as they loaded the bases with just one out but Fisher escaped again by getting Sinclair to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Stlil trailing 4-0, FDU-Florham broke through for a run in the top of the fourth. Christopher Franco smacked a leadoff double and then advanced to third on a single by Reynaldo Diaz, which allowed Josh DellaPietro to net the first run with a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, that would be all the runs the Devils could muster in the inning.

King's added to its lead with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to stretch its cushion to 10-1.

Vinny Bonaccorso knocked in the Devils' second and final run of the day with an RBI double down the right field line in the seventh inning.

Sinclair, Franco and Vin Bonaccorso each tallied two hits for the Devils in the loss, while Tassielli reached twice via the walk.

Leadoff man Tom Gibbons paced the Monarchs' offense with a 3-for-5 day, which included three runs scored.

These two teams square off tomorrow for a doubleheader in Madison beginning at 1 p.m. The Devils will honor their eight seniors prior to first pitch.
