Tassielli Sparks Comeback Win as Baseball Splits with Monarchs

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team closed its conference schedule with a doubleheader split against King's College on Saturday afternoon. Powered by senior center fielder Frankie Tassielli, the Devils earned a come from behind 8-7 win in game one but dropped game two 8-2.

The Devils (15-20-1, 8-13 MAC Freedom) erased a 7-1 deficit in the opener before Tassielli provided the heroics with a bases-loaded, walk-off single in the eighth inning. The senior finished with four RBI in the game, to eclipse the 100-career RBI mark.

Game One: (FDU-Florham 8, King's College 7 (8 inn.)

In the opening game of the day, the Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their first turn at bat. Senior catcher Kevin Sinclair led off with his patented opposite field single, then Josh DellaPietro followed with an opposite-field knock of his own.

Two batters later, shortstop Bryan Pieschel plated Sinclair with the game's first run on an two-out single to center field.

The Monarchs (23-13, 11-10 MAC Freedom) pulled even by taking advantage of a few wild pitches and netted a run on a single by Chris Rebar. Aided by three Devils' errors in the fourth, the Monarchs scratched across a pair of runs to take a 3-1 edge.

In the top of the fifth, the Monarchs' offense broke through for four runs on five hits against FDU-Florham starter Kenny Carrier. Kyle Lupas delivered the key blow for the Monarchs with a two-run triple, which one-hopped the center field fence.

But the Devils showed tremendous resilience by rallying back in the home half of the inning. A walk, followed by a David Wilbur single set the stage for the inning. DellaPietro knocked in the first run with a single to center field.

With two men on and one out, Tassielli stepped in and clobbered his 16th career home run and seventh of the season, with a long blast over the left field fence, which made it a 7-5 game. Tassielli currently ranks fifth all-time in school history for round-trippers.

Also celebrating his senior day, right fielder Vinny Bonaccorso capped the fifth-inning surge by plating Pieschel with a ringing double to right center field, which pulled the Devils within one at 7-6.

Trey Congleton came on in relief of Carrier and did an excellent job keeping the Monarchs' bats in check by pitching three scoreless frames.

Joseph Bonaccorso opened the home eighth with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by Wilbury.

After a wild pitch and a pair of intentional walks, Tassielli stepped to the dish and lined an 0-2 pitch into right-center field for the walk-off victory.

Tassielli finished game one 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Pieschel also added two hits in the win.

Game Two: (FDU-Florham 2, King's College 8)

The Monarchs jumped on senior right-hander Justin White in the second game of the day with three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. Tom Gibbons opened the game with a double down the right field line and later scored on a single by Bruce Breithaupt.

White escaped a second-inning jam aided by the defensive play of the game. Despite four hits in the inning, the Monarchs were kept off of the board after a line drive shot out to right field was snagged by Vinny Bonaccorso, who then unleashed a laser throw to home plate, which nabbed the potential run by several feet and kept the deficit at 3-0.

However, the Monarchs were able to add to their lead with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth, which stretched the cushion to 7-0.

A triple to the fence in right field by Pieschel helped the Devils net their first run of the day. Christopher Franco knocked in Pieschel from third with a sacrifice fly but the Monarchs countered with a run of their home in the top of the fifth for an 8-1 ballgame.

Vin Bonaccorso was responsible for the Devils' second and final run of the day as he hammered a solo blast over the left field fence for his second home run of the season.

King's starter Zach Palansky (5-0) picked up the complete-game victory, allowing just five hits and two runs, while striking out eight.

The Devils close out the 2016 season when they host Western Connecticut State this Tuesday, May 3 in the season finale at 3:30 p.m.
