Eastern Uses Second-Half Outburst to Top Devils 8-3

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham men's lacrosse team dropped its final regular-season road contest 9-3 to Eastern University at Olson Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Devils (5-9, 3-3 MAC Freedom) found themselves tied with the first-place Eagles (11-5, 6-0 MAC Freedom) in the second half before the home team broke loose with seven of the game's last eight goals to seal the win.

Senior attack Daniel Minnich was responsible for two of the Devils' three tallies in the loss as Matt Melnik registered the team's third goal.

FDU-Florham will need to win its regular season finale against Wilkes University (0-14, 0-6 MAC Freedom) on Saturday in order to lock up the No. 4 seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament.

After a scoreless first period, Eastern's Trevor Gallion netted the game's first goal at the 12:07 mark of quarter number two.

Minnich broke through at the 4:15 mark with the Devils' first goal by finishing off an assist from teammate David Stewart.

The game appeared poised to head to the halftime break deadlocked at 1-1, however, Eastern's Tim Lamb put the Eagles in front with just 18 seconds to go in the stanza.

Making his second consecutive start in goal for the Devils, freshman netminder Tom Tornetto made his stopped seven shots through the first 30 minutes of action. Tornetto finished with 13 saves on the afternoon.

Minnich opened the second-half scoring by firing home an assist from Matt Melnik, which pulled the Devils even at 2-2.  But the Eagles had other plans, as they scored three-straight times before Melnik buried a feed from Stewart with 29 seconds to go in the frame.

Eastern blanked the Devils in the final quarter, while tacking on four goals, which put the game out of reach.

With his two-goal effort, Minnich now has 16 goals on the season, while Melnik currently sits at 14 on the campaign.

The Devils will look to secure a postseason berth when they host Wilkes University for senior day this Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m.
