DellaPietro Delivers Walk-Off Win for Devils in Series Sweep of Eagles

MADISON, N.J. – Behind a heroic hitting day from junior Josh DellaPietro, the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team was able to sweep the Eastern University Eagles in a MAC Freedom doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1 (FDU-Florham 10, Eastern 6)

To open up the afternoon, Brad Norris got the nod for the Devils and he was effective on the mound. Norris pitched to contact and caused the Eagles to ground out seven times in five innings while only surrendering two earned runs.

At the plate the Devils received a strong showing from DellaPietro who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Joseph Breymeier also had three RBIs in the game with a run scored.

After the Eagles plated a run in the second, the Devils countered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Bryan Pieschel reached base safely to start the inning after getting hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Sam Coutoufos came up and singled into left field and Pieschel came in to score.

DellaPietro was due up next and he shot an RBI single into right-center before Joseph Bonnacorso stepped into the box and doubled to left. With two runners on base, Breymeier grounded into a fielder's choice but the run came in to score on the play.

Breymeier worked his way into scoring position after stealing second and he then scored once Kevin Sinclair hit an RBI single to left.

Trailing by three runs, the Eagles scored in the third but once again the Devils responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own to keep the lead at three.

In the fifth inning Pieschel got things started with a walk and he moved over to second once Christopher Franco singled to center field. Two batters later DellaPietro stepped into the box and doubled to right field, allowing Pieschel to come in to score.

With two outs and two runners on, Breymeier singled through the left side and two runs scored on the hit to give FDU-Florham an 8-2 lead.

The Eagles cut the deficit to two with four runs in the sixth inning. However, in the bottom half of the sixth the Devils plated a pair of runs and grabbed the eventual 10-6 victory.

Game 2 (FDU-Florham 11, Eastern 10)

The second game of the afternoon featured a huge comeback by the Devils as they won 11-10 in dramatic fashion.

Senior Vinny Bonaccorso was inserted into the leadoff spot in the second game and he scored three runs for the Devils. Meanwhile, DellaPietro continued to swing a hot bat and he went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Pieschel scored a pair of runs and knocked in three while going 1-for-3 at the plate. Joseph Bonaccorso added two runs on two hits with an RBI.

Heading into the bottom half of the fourth, the Devils trailed 4-1. After Pieschel walked and Ben Thompson singled through the left side, Joseph Bonaccorso shot an RBI single into center to cut the deficit to two.

The Eastern lead grew to eight though after plating six runs in the top half of the fifth.

After forcing the final two Eastern batters in the sixth to ground out there was some momentum swaying in the direction of FDU-Florham.  Thompson kicked things off by drawing a base on balls and after Bonaccorso singled into center, there were two runners on with no outs.

Eastern was able to record the first out of the inning but the Devils' bats suddenly came to life. The first run of the inning crossed the plate once Breymeier singled up the middle. The bases were then loaded for DellaPietro after Vinny Bonaccorso was hit by a pitch.

DellaPietro reared back shot an RBI single through the left side. Another run crossed the plate once Tassielli was hit by a pitch.

With the bases loaded, Pieschel stepped into the box and rifled the ball off of the fence in right field for a bases clearing double.

The Devils added one final run in the inning on a Reynaldo Diaz sacrifice fly to right field and all of a sudden the Eagles' lead was cut to one.

Quick work was made of the Eastern lineup in the top half of the seventh and the Devils came up to bat looking to even the score.

Joseph Bonaccorso drew a leadoff walk and he moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sinclair. After the second out of the inning was recorded, Vinny Bonaccorso drew a base on balls.

With two outs and two runners on base, DellaPietro came up to bat and he blasted the ball to deep left-center for a two-RBI double and the Devils won on the booming walk-off hit.

The Devils continue MAC Freedom action in their next contest when they visit King's College this Friday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m.
