Carrier's Complete Game Gives Devils Split with Colonels

MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore right-hander Kenny Carrier gave the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team a huge boost as the Devils salvaged a doubleheader split with conference-foe Wilkes University at the Florham Campus on Saturday afternoon. The Devils dropped game one 3-0 but took the rubber match of the three-game series 6-3.

Carrier (3-4) willed his way to a complete-game victory in the second game of the day by scattering 11 hits and three runs across his seven innings of work, while striking out six.

In the opening game of the day, the Colonels (18-17, 7-11 MAC Freedom) received a solid pitching performance from Quinn Kelly, who silenced the Devils (12-18-1, 5-11 MAC Freedom) for a complete-game shutout.

Game 1:
Kelly (2-3) limited the Devils to just four hits in game one on Saturday.  Senior right-hander Andrew Hille (0-4) took the ball for the Devils and also pitched well but was doomed by a couple of bad bounces in the infield and some untimely walks.

Both pitchers worked out of first-inning jams to keep the game scoreless. In the top of the first, the Colonels loaded the bases with nobody out and looked poised to get on the board against Hille. However, the senior settled in by striking out Wilkes' cleanup man Joe Champi and then induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to escape danger.

In the home first, the Devils also had the bases loaded with two outs and were unable to deliver the clutch hit as the game remained knotted at 0-0 after one.

Following a scoreless second frame, the Colonels scored two runs on a hard-hit groundball by Champi, which leapt into right-center field. Wilkes added another tally with a sacrifice fly, which concluded the scoring in the opener.

The Devils struggled to string together baserunners against Kelly, who settled into a groove en route to the complete-game win.

Hille also went the distance, allowing six hits and three runs, while striking out seven on the afternoon.

Game 2:
The Colonels jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second game of the day but the Devils stormed back in the home third as the bats broke out for the first time all day.

Shortstop Joseph Breymeier and senior catcher Kevin Sinclair tallied singles and then the Devils took advantage of a throwing error to net their first run of the afternoon.

Following a Frankie Tassielli walk, cleanup hitter Bryan Pieschel lined a basehit up the middle, which plated the Devils' second run. Sophomore first baseman Reynaldo Diaz followed with a two-run single up the middle and the Devils had a 4-2 lead.

The Colonels got a run back in the fourth but FDU-Florham added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Tassielli knocked in Sinclair with an opposite-field single and the Devils eventually added another run later in the inning after a pair of errors by the Colonels.

Wilkes refused to go quietly in the top of the seventh and loaded the bases against Carrier, who fought valiantly to keep them off the board.  With his pitch count rapidly rising, the Devils' sophomore right-hander dug deep to strike out pinch hitter Matt Dacey and finalize the victory.

The Devils are back in action tomorrow with a home conference doubleheader against Eastern University.  First pitch is set for 11 a.m. at the Florham Campus.
