DellaPietro Powers Devils Past Drew in Madison Avenue Challenge

MADISON, N.J. – Powered by three home runs, including a pair of two-run blasts from Josh DellaPietro, the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team topped cross-street rival Drew University 8-3 in the second-annual Madison Avenue Challenge at Dodge Field on Wednesday night.

The Devils (10-17-1) received a stellar pitching performance from senior right-hander Justin White, who tossed five scoreless innings to earn his first victory of the season, while Joshua Williams took the loss for the Rangers (15-18).

In the bottom of the second, DellaPietro, who had not homered all season, broke through with the first runs of the night by blasting an opposite field two-run homer over the right-center field fence.

Still leading 2-0, in the top of the fifth, FDU-Florham used the long ball to enhance their lead. First, junior shortstop Bryan Pieschel jacked a solo shot over the right field fence. Then, just two batters later, DellaPietro clobbered another two-run blast, which nearly landed in the exact same spot as his first home run.

FDU-Florham tacked onto its lead with three runs in the top of the seventh courtesy of an RBI single by Sam Coutoufos and a two-run double down the right-field line by Vinny Bonaccorso, which built the cushion to 8-0.

The Rangers took advantage of a pair of defensive miscues to scratch across three runs in the home seventh but Will Lapham and Steven Smiegocki were able to close down the victory with two scoreless frames.

Coutoufos led the Devils offense with a 4-for-5 day including two runs scores and upped his team-leading batting average to .385. Leadoff man Kevin Sinclair drew four walks on the day and now has a .443 on-base percentage this season.

The Devils return to MAC Freedom action for their next contest this Friday, April 22 at Wilkes University.
