Devils Hammer Season-High 19 Hits in 12-5 Win Over NJCU

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team pounded a season-high 19 hits en route to a 12-5 victory over New Jersey City University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior catcher Kevin Sinclair led the offensive barrage for the Devils (8-14-1) with a 4-for-5 performance, including four RBI and two runs on the day.  Sinclair's fellow fourth-year teammate, Frankie Tassielli also had a huge afternoon with four hits in his five plate appearances and knocked in a pair of runs.

Freshman right-hander Brad Norris improved to 3-0 on the campaign by tossing two scoreless frames before giving way to the FDU-Florham bullpen.

The Gothic Knights (13-9) were paced offensively by shortstop Nick LoGatto, who went 2-for-3 and also pitched the final inning in relief.

Following a scoreless first frame, the Devils offense broke out in a big way in the home second. Designated hitter Ben Dranow opened the inning with a booming double and later scored on a two-bagger by teammate Joseph Bonaccorso. After a walk, Sinclair went to work with a two-run double of his own, which ended NJCU starter Jason Szurlej's afternoon.

The Devils tacked on two more runs in the frame thanks to a long, opposite-field triple by Tassielli and a well-placed single by Bryan Pieschel, which resulted in a 6-0 lead through two.

An RBI single by Sinclair in the third stretched the Devils' cushion to 7-0 before the Gothic Knights tallied three runs in the top of the fifth. LoGatto plated one with a double and leadoff man Nick Ruscingno knocked in two with a single.

Leading 8-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Devils put the game out of reach with four runs on five hits. The door was left open after a two-out error by the Gothic Knights and the Devils took full advantage.  Sinclair, Vinny Bonaccorso and Tassielli all tallied run-scoring knocks in the inning as the Devils opened up a 12-4 lead, which they would not relinquish.

Sophomore left fielder Ben Thompson finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Joseph Breymeier chipped in with two hits in the win.

The Devils will look to continue their hot-hitting when they return to MAC Freedom action against DeSales University this Friday, April 15. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. in Madison.
