Devils Drop First of Three Games to Bulldogs 6-2

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team was unable to come through with the timely hits that they needed and fell to DeSales University 6-2 in conference action on Friday afternoon.

The Devils (8-15-1, 2-9 MAC Freedom) outhit the Bulldogs (16-10, 8-3 MAC Freedom) 7-4 but bounced into three double plays and stranded 11 baserunners on the afternoon, which proved to be too much to overcome.

Senior right-hander Andrew Hille (0-3) started for the Devils and settled in after a lengthy first inning. The Bulldogs netted two runs, one earned, against Hille in the first but the senior held them hitless and scoreless in his final five innings of work.

A pair of walks and an untimely balk set the stage for the Bulldogs in their first turn at bat. DeSales notched its first run on a groundout and then Jesse Smoot lined a two-run single into right field, which resulted in a 3-0 lead through a half inning of play. Smoot's single marked the only hit DeSales would record against Hille in his five innings on the mound.

DeSales' starting pitcher Adam Donovan (1-3) worked in and out of danger all afternoon. After a leadoff walk in the home first, Donovan induced his first of three double plays on the day.

Hille cruised through the top of the second inning with a pair of strikeouts and the Devils again threatened in the home half of the frame. Following a pair of walks, Reynaldo Diaz singled through the left side, which loaded the bases with one out; however, Donovan escaped the jam with a strikeout and an infield pop-up.

In the third and fourth innings, Donovan again used the pitcher's best friend to prevent the Devils' from breaking through with their first run.

Finally, in the home fifth, the Devils were able to get on the board against Donovan. A leadoff error set the stage for Josh DellaPietro, who promptly smoked a double to the gap in left-center field, which plated Diaz. Kevin Sinclair followed with an opposite field single but Donovan retired the next two batters in order to limit the damage to just the one run.

Still trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Devils again found themselves in a position to break out. With two outs and one on, senior left fielder Sam Coutofous lined a base hit into center field. Frankie Tassielli followed with an RBI single that cut the deficit to one run. However, Donovan was able to get an inning-ending groundout and preserve the 3-2 lead for the Bulldogs.

In the top of the eighth, DeSales tacked on a run when a two-out error by the Devils allowed the Bulldogs' fourth run to cross the plate. Then in the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs opened up a four-run lead, highlighted by a leadoff homer by Tommy Epsaro, which was launched over the left-center field fence.  Evan Fraser came on to pitch the final inning and despite a few hiccups prevented the Devils from scoring and sealed the win for DeSales.

Donovan threw 108 pitches over his 6.1 innings of work, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out four.

Hille went six innings allowing two runs (one earned) and four walks, while striking out four Bulldogs on the afternoon.

These two teams meet again tomorrow for a twinbill beginning at 1 p.m. in Center Valley, Pa.
