Baseball Swept Away by Cougars

DALLAS, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Misericordia University on Sunday afternoon at Tambur Field. The Devils (7-14-1, 2-8 MAC Freedom) fell 9-3 in game one and lost game two 4-1 to the Cougars (17-7, 8-2), who currently sit atop the MAC Freedom standings.

Game 1:

In the opening game on Sunday, the Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their first turn at bat. A pair of walks set the table for Christopher Franco who delivered an RBI-infield single.

The Cougars immediately responded by getting to FDU-Florham starter Kenny Carrier for three runs on three hits in the home first. Alec Iurato highlighted the outburst with a two-run double to left field. Misericordia tacked on an unearned run in the second inning after a single and a sacrifice bunt advanced a runner into scoring position.

In the top of the third, the Devils fought back, as the heart of the lineup came through with a string of hits. Frankie Tassielli doubled down the left field line and then Bryan Pieschel singled to center. Franco followed with an RBI groundout before Reynaldo Diaz knocked in Pieschel with a double to center field.

However, the Cougars countered again in their next at bat with three runs on three hits, which stretched the lead to 7-3.

Misericordia's starting pitcher, Cory Vogeli  settled in and kept the Devils off the board in the fourth and fifth before the Cougars' bullpen pitched two scoreless frames to seal the win.

Tassielli, Pieschel and Franco each recorded two hits in the win, while Carrier pitched all six innings, allowing nine runs (six earned) and 10 hits to go along with three strikeouts.

With his five innings of work, Vogeli improved to 4-0 on the campaign.

Game 2:

Misericordia freshman left-hander Zach Mason kept the FDU-Florham bats in check in the second game of the day. Mason moved to 2-0 by tossing six innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out four.

The Cougars scored one run in the first inning and three in the third, which built a 4-0 cushion.

In the home third, the Cougars' first run crossed on a wild pitch before three straight singles led to two more runs, however, FDU-Florham left-hander Matt Zingaro was able to limit the damage but inducing an inning-ending double play.
Zingaro went five innings, allowed four runs, while striking out four.

The Devils tallied their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth after a throwing error by the Cougars allowed Pieschel to safely advance to third base.  Vinny Bonaccorso then plated Pieschel with a fielder's choice ground ball.

With two on and one out, Mason retired the next two Devils in order and preserved the Cougars' three-run lead.

The fourth-inning proved to be the Devils' best chance as Mason settled in before giving way to Elliott Forde, who pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn his second save of the season.

Next up for the Devils is a non-conference game against New Jersey City University this Tuesday, April 12. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. in Madison.
