Softball Drops Windy Doubleheader at Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham softball team dropped a pair of games at Stockton University on Thursday afternoon, dropping the first game 1-0 before falling in game two 11-3.

The Devils (6-8) were unable to get their bats going on the extremely windy afternoon as the Ospreys (14-4) earned the shutout in game one before earning a fifth-inning walk off in game two.

Game 1:

The opening game featured a pitcher's duel between FDU-Florham's Sydney Worek (4-4) and Stockton's Samantha Shockey (5-2).

The two starters went toe-to-toe and refused to allow a single hit over the first three frames. Neither starter waivered over the next few innings and the game remained deadlocked at 0-0 through seven.

The Devils' best scoring chance came in the top of the fourth when Paige Lillie reached on a leadoff walk and Nikki Caruso followed with a single through the left side. However, Shockey wiggled her way out of trouble by retiring the next three batters in order, including an inning-ending strikeout of FDU-Florham shortstop Rebecca DeCarlo.

Worek faced some trouble in the bottom of the seventh but worked around a pair of hits to extend the game to extra innings.

After the Devils went down quietly in the eighth, the Ospreys walked off in the home half of the frame when Alexis Dunphy smacked the game-winning single off of the first baseman's glove.

Worek took the hard-luck loss despite 7.1 outstanding innings. The senior right-hander allowed four hits and one unearned run, while striking out four.

Shockey went eight scoreless innings for the Ospreys and allowed just three hits and two walks to go along with four strikeouts.

Caruso was responsible for two of the team's three hits with Jacquelyn Tartaglia tallying the third.

Game 2:

The Devils started fast in the second game as Marlena Bevilacqua and Paige Lillie each reached to open the first.  Following a successful double steal, the Devils appeared poised to break out for the first time on the afternoon; however, Stockton managed to nab Bevilacqua at the plate before Shockey retired the next two batters in order.

Shockey continued her dominance with a smooth second inning before giving way to Victoria Torp.

The Ospreys exploded for five runs on six hits in the home second, highlighted by a pair of two-run doubles by Nicole Tomo and Danielle Lugo.

FDU-Florham answered with two runs in the third via a Taylor Torre single and a two-run double by freshman designated player Courtney Rohde.

Stockton stretched its lead to 7-2 with two runs in the fourth. The Devils got a run back in the fifth after Caruso tripled and scored on a Torre single but the Ospreys countered with four runs on three hits in the home fifth to enact the run rule at eight runs.

Caruso finished with another multi-hit effort by going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Torre also went 2-for-3 in the loss.

Brittany Funicelli took the loss for the Devils by tossing two innings and allowing five runs before Audrie Thomas pitched the final 2.2 innings.

The Devils return to action this Saturday, April 2 when they travel to Eastern University for a MAC Freedom doubleheader beginning at noon.
