Baseball Knocks Off No. 10 Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – Sophomore shortstop Bryan Pieschel knocked in two runs to help lead the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team to a 5-1 upset of No. 10 Rutgers University-Camden on Wednesday afternoon at Campbell's Field.

One week after playing No. 3-ranked Ramapo College to a 7-7 tie, the Devils (6-11-1) were able to quiet the nationally-ranked Scarlet Raptors' (10-4) bats and hand them their second consecutive loss.

Junior right-hander Tyler Keefe set the tone for the Devils by pitching five outstanding innings to earn his first victory of the season. Keefe scattered four hits, walked three and struck out one before giving way to the Devils' bullpen.

John Armstrong, Walter Pennett, Will Lapham, and Steven Smiegocki each pitched one inning of scoreless relief and held the Scarlet Raptors to just one hit over the final four frames.

After Keefe worked out of a two-out jam in the second, the Devils offense broke through in the top half of the third.

The Devils loaded the bases with a single, a walk and an error, which brought Vinny Bonaccorso to the plate with one away. Bonaccorso lined a base hit into right center field, which scored the Devils first run of the game. Frankie Tassielli followed with an RBI-walk before Pieschel gave the Devils a 3-0 lead with a single to right.

Keefe coasted through the home third before running into some trouble in the fourth. After retiring the first two batters, Keefe allowed a double and a hit by pitch, however, the junior right-hander induced a timely groundout to escape unscathed.

A Bonaccorso double set up the Devils' fourth run in the home fourth. Pieschel came through with a two-out single to center, which plated Bonaccorso and extended the lead to 4-0.

The Devils added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Pieschel walked and stole second to get into scoring position for Christopher Franco, who promptly knocked an RBI-single.

Five runs were more than enough for the Devils' relievers, who kept the Scarlet Raptors offense off-balance for the remainder of the game

Pieschel paced the FDU-Florham offense with a 2-for-3 effort including two RBI, one run and two stolen bases. The Devils' shortstop found his way on base all afternoon and added two walks in the win.

Bonaccorso finished the game 2-for-5, while Tassielli's RBI added to his team-leading total of 20.

Andrew Biggs (0-1) took the loss for Rutgers-Camden by allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks in his five innings of work. Joe Brooks was the lone Scarlet Raptor to generate a multi-hit effort with a 2-for-3 performance in the loss.

The Devils will look to continue the momentum when they return to MAC Freedom action for their next contest this Friday, April 1 against Eastern University. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. in St. Davids, Pa.
