Devils Win High-Scoring, Rain-Shortened Contest Over Eagles

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team battled rainy weather conditions to top Eastern University 14-11 in a high-scoring conference battle on Friday afternoon.

In the first of three meetings between these two teams this weekend, the Devils (7-11-1, 2-5 MAC Freedom) earned the important MAC Freedom road win over the Eagles (8-10-2, 3-4 MAC Freedom). The game was called after a rain and lightning delay in the seventh inning.

The Devils rallied from a five-run first inning deficit to take the lead and earn the victory. Freshman right-hander Brad Norris came on in relief of starter Justin White in the fourth inning and tossed two innings to improve to 2-0 on the campaign. Norris and the Devils' pitchers were aided by an offensive outburst that saw the Devils hammer 16 hits and take advantage of four Eagles' errors.

Senior left fielder Sam Coutoufos led a monster offensive effort by the Devils with a 4-for-4 effort including three runs and two RBI.

Eastern jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead thanks in part to a mammoth grand slam by Andrew Check. But the Devils remained undeterred and plated eight runs in the top of the second inning.

The massive inning began with singles by Coutoufos and Joe Bonaccorso.  After Eastern starter Ryan Kehr retired the next two batters, he appeared to be poised to escape the jam unscathed; however, an error opened the doors for the FDU-Florham offense.

Frankie Tassielli followed with an RBI single and Bryan Pieschel drew a walk, which loaded the bases. Christopher Franco, Reynaldo Diaz, and Coutoufos each followed with run-scoring singles before Joe Bonaccorso smoked an opposite-field double, which gave the Devils an 8-5 lead.

Later in the game, the Eagles cut the Devils' lead down to 9-8 but run-scoring knocks by Diaz, Coutofos and Joe Bonaccorso in the fourth provided breathing room.  Then, in the top of the fifth, Franco delivered an RBI double and Coutoufos tacked on another with a single down the right field line to increase the cushion to 14-8.

With a six-run lead in hand, the Devils were able to hold off a sixth-inning burst by the home team to secure the abbreviated victory.

The game would be delayed one inning later and after resuming play briefly in the bottom of the seventh, another storm front moved through causing the game to be called.

Joe Bonaccorso went 3-for-4 in the win with three RBI and a run scored, while four other Devils tallied multi-hit efforts on the day.

Walter Pennett pitched a scoreless inning of relief to earn his first career save.

These two teams meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader in Madison with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at the Florham Campus.
