Softball Drops Doubleheader Series to Valiants

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham softball team was defeated by the Manhattanville College Valiants 10-0 and 13-5 in a MAC Freedom doubleheader series on Wednesday afternoon.

Game 1 (5 Innings)

In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Valiants jumped on the board early. Following four straight walks, the bases were loaded with one out for Evonne Torres and she came up and hit the ball over the fence for a grand slam.

FDU-Florham got their first hit of the afternoon in the top half of the second when Taylor Torre knocked a one-out single into center field, but the Valiants were able to work out of the inning unharmed.

The Valiants then came up in the bottom half of the inning and scored two runs on back-to-back RBI singles from Laurel Coito and Desiree Buboi.

In the fourth inning, the Valiants lead extended to 10 when Alicia Marino knocked a three-run homer over the left field fence.

Paige Lillie came up for FDU-Florham in the fifth and led off the inning with a double to right center. However, the Valiants managed to retire the rest of the Devils' batters and grab the win in the first game.

Game 2 (5 Innings)

The second game featured more offense as the two teams combined for 18 runs in five innings of play.

After the Valiants (14-0, 4-0 MAC Freedom) tallied a run in the first inning, the Devils (6-6, 2-2 MAC Freedom) came up to bat and responded with a leadoff home run by Torre, her second of the season.

FDU-Florham was not able to hang onto to lead for too long though as the Valiants notched two runs in the bottom half of the second to grab a 3-1 lead.

In the third, Marlena Bevilacqua hit a one-out single to center and two batters later, she came around to score on a Nikki Caruso RBI double to left center.

The Valiants added two more runs in the bottom of the third before exploding for a five-run fourth inning.

Sophomore Michelle Mangini led off the fifth for the Devils by drawing a base on balls. After stealing second, she came around to score on a throwing error by a Valiants fielder.

Following a Rebecca DeCarlo one-out single through the right side, Caruso hit her second double of the game. The Devils had runners on second and third and senior Wynne McCann hit a sacrifice fly to center field. On the following at-bat, Torre reached on a fielding error and Caruso sprinted to the plate and scored.
