Offensive Barrage Highlights Two-Game Sweep for Devils

MADISON, N.J. – It was a memorable afternoon at McManus Field for the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham softball team as the Devils set two new program records in a two-game sweep of Delaware Valley University. The Devils rolled in game one 25-4 before scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn an 8-7, walk-off victory in the second game.

In game one, the Devils (6-4, 2-0 MAC Freedom) scored 25 runs and hammered 27 hits, which are the most since the program's records have been recorded. The 27 hits are also the second most in NCAA Division III this season.

Game two featured heroics by the FDU-Florham offense as the Devils overcame a three-run deficit in the final at bat before Jaclyn Herrington delivered a game-winning, two-out single.

Game 1

The Devils' home opener got off to a resounding start as the team's number two hitter, Rebecca DeCarlo launched a two-run blast to dead center field. Nikki Caruso and Wynne McCann followed with singles and two batters later, Paige Lillie launched a three-run home run over the left field fence for a 5-0 Devils' lead.

After the Devils' starting pitcher Sydney Worek worked a smooth second frame, the Devils came back to bat and immediately went to work.

In the second frame, the Devils plated 11 runs on 11 hits, including eight straight hits. The offensive barrage was highlighted by an opposite field long ball from Caruso.

The Devils eventually capped the five-inning victory by pouring in two runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth.  The box score was littered with standout performances as Marlena Bevilacqua and Caruso each went 4-for-5, while five other hitters tallied three-hit games.

Herrington led the way with four RBI, while Caruso, Lillie and DeCarlo all had three. Caruso scored a team-high four runs on the afternoon, as well.

Aided by the huge offensive output, Worek earned the victory and tallied five strikeouts.

Game 2

The second game of the twinbill was a highly contested back-and-forth matchup. Delaware Valley (5-6, 0-2 MAC Freedom) starter kept the red-hot FDU-Florham offense in check for most of the contest and the Aggies led 7-4 heading to the final frame.

After Caruso reached on an error, McCann smoked an RBI-double to the fence in right-center field, which set the stage for the comeback. Taylor Torre followed with a single and then Lillie delivered a run-scoring single.

The Devils tied the game on a groundout before Herrington came through with the heroics.  Herrington, the team's senior first baseman, found a pitch she liked and drove it right up the middle as Lillie raced around third and crossed plate for the victory.

DeCarlo, Lillie and McCann all tallied two hits in the thrilling win. Worek entered in the fifth to a tied game and picked up her second victory of the season to improve to 4-1 overall.

Next up, the Devils head to Centenary College to take on the Cyclones this Wednesday, March 23 at 3 p.m. The doubleheader marks the first of six straight road contests for FDU-Florham.
