DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – After returning from competing in the Russmatt Invitational in Auburndale, Fla., the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team kicked off MAC Freedom play and split a double header series with the Delaware Valley University Aggies on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1
In the opening game of the doubleheader, sophomore pitcher Kenny Carrier took the mound and he tossed his first career complete game to push the Devils (5-6) past the Aggies (7-3) 8-2. Over the course of the seven innings, he only surrendered two runs and five hits, while striking out five batters.
Senior Frankie Tassielli had a great day at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Aside from Tassielli, Kevin Sinclair and Bryan Pieschel also recorded two hits and combined to score three runs.
In the top half of the fourth, Pieschel led things off with a walk and then stole second. Reynaldo Diaz then came up and also drew a base on balls. After the Aggies recorded an out, Christopher Franco reached base safely on a fielder's choice.
With two runners on base, Sam Coutoufos also hit into a fielder's choice, but Pieschel was able to score on the play to put the Devils up 1-0.
The Devils were back on the attack in the top of the sixth. Delaware Valley was able to record an out after the first two Devils' batters drew walks. However, the Devils hit back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to three runs.
With a three-run lead, Tassielli continued the hot hitting for the Devils with a two-RBI double into left field. FDU-Florham managed to add one more run before the inning came to a close.
The Aggies finally got to Carrier in the bottom half of the sixth. The bases were loaded and Matt Dewald hit an RBI single up the middle. Sammy Amos was the next batter up for the Aggies and he reached base safely on a fielder's choice, but a run was able to cross the plate on the play and the deficit was cut to four.
In the final inning of play, the Devils had something brewing when Josh DellaPietro hit a one-out double to left center. A few batters later, Tassielli came up with two on and two outs and he shot a two-RBI double to left field and the Devils took an 8-2 lead.
Carrier closed out the game by striking out two of the final three batters for the Aggies and the Devils came away victorious.
Game 2
In the second game of the twin bill, the Devils' (5-7) bats were held to just two hits as the Aggies' (8-3) pitcher, Chris Kelly, tossed a complete game to help Delaware Valley defeat FDU-Florham 5-0.
To kick off the game, Tassielli shot a two-out single into center field and he stole second. Pieschel then drew a base on balls, but Kelly successfully worked out of the jam.
In the bottom half of the second, the Aggies had two runners on base with two outs and Ben Lippincott singled through the right side and a run was able to score. On the same play, another Aggies' run crossed the plate on a costly throwing error by the Devils.
Delaware Valley managed to add a run in the third and fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead over the Devils. The Aggies came up to hit in the sixth and after Kyle Wenger knocked a two-out double into left center, he came in to score on a Dewald RBI single up the middle.
With a five-run lead, the Aggies were able to close out the game unscathed and grab the conference win.
The Devils will close out the season series with the Aggies on Monday, March 21 in Madison at 3:30 p.m.
