Devils Drop Rubber Game to Aggies 8-5

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham baseball team dropped the rubber game of its three game series with Delaware Valley University 8-5 on Tuesday afternoon in MAC Freedom action.

The Devils (5-8, 1-2 MAC Freedom) struggled to get into an offensive rhythm against Delaware Valley (9-3, 2-1 MAC Freedom) starter Ben Lippincott, who went the distance to earn the victory.

Senior center fielder Frankie Tassielli extended his hit streak to 13 with a 1-for-5 effort in the loss and has now recorded a hit in each game this season.

The trio of Trey Congleton, Walter Pennett, and Steven Smiegocki did an excellent job in relief to prevent the Aggies from scoring over the final four frames but the Devils were unable to mount a comeback.

The Aggies opened up a 3-0 lead with three hits in the top of the first but the Devils got one back courtesy of a two-out single from Bryan Pieschel in the home half of the inning.

Delaware Valley went back to work with a run in the third before opening up an 8-1 lead with four runs and four hits in the fourth off of FDU-Florham starter Matt Zingaro. Bobby Altieri delivered the key blow for the Aggies with a two-run double.

The Devils put together a two-out rally in the home fourth with a single from Vinny Bonaccorso, a double by Christopher Franco and a defensive miscue, which plated a run but Lippincott escaped by striking out Josh DellaPietro to end the threat.

Zingaro finished strong by pitching a scoreless fifth inning and striking out his final batter of the afternoon. The Devils' southpaw finished with three strikeouts on the day.

Congleton gave the Devils two excellent innings out of the pen limiting the Aggies to one hit, while striking out four.

Trailing 8-3 in the bottom of the eighth, the Devils built some momentum after a Pieschel double and a fielding error by the Aggies. A Bonaccorso walk loaded the bases and then Franco smacked an RBI-single to left. The Devils added one more when Ben Thompson scored pinch runner Nicholas LaVecchia with a sacrifice fly. However, Lippincott was able to pitch around a leadoff walk in the ninth and finish off the complete game.

The Aggies' sophomore right-hander scattered seven hits on the day, walked four and struck out five to move to 1-0 on the campaign.

Kyle Wenger and Matt Dewald led the Aggies offense with three hits apiece and combined to drive in three runs and score three.

Pieschel and Franco each tallied two-hit games for the Devils in the loss, while Sinclair reached base three times with three walks.

Next up for the Devils is a home contest against the No. 4-ranked and undefeated Ramapo College Roadrunners  this Thursday, March 24 at 3:30 p.m.
