PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson Univeristy-Florham men's basketball team fell to the Manhattanville College Valiants 75-52 on Wednesday night in a MAC Freedom game.
Senior guard Charlie Slack led the Devils in scoring with a career-high 15 points in his first career start. He shot 7-of-14 from the field and also tallied three assists in the game.
Junior forward Donte Ali notched nine points and six boards, while Tyler Christie and Alex Hanssen each added eight in the scoring column.
The Devils' (4-18, 2-9 MAC Freedom) defense limited the Valiants (13-9, 6-5 MAC Freedom) to just 36 percent shooting from the field, but Manhattanville did its damage from beyond the arc, burying 11 three-point shots. Leading the long-ball barrage for the Valiants was Anthony Maestre and Chris Ayson, who both knocked down four 3-pointers.
Manhattanville got out to an early 26-point lead after they went on an enormous 31-7 run that spanned 11 minutes in the opening half and was capped off by a Maestre long-range make.
In the closing minutes of the first half through the early stages of the second, the Devils began to build some momentum off of a bevy of made shots from Slack and Christie. It was a 15-4 run pieced together by the Devils to cut the deficit to 15, 43-28, but the Valiants answered quickly with another large run of their own.
About a quarter of the way through the final half of play, the Valiants knocked down six three-point shots in a three-minute span. Ayson was responsible for three of the makes.
In the final 10 minutes, the Devils had one last charge in them as they went on a 15-3 run that was capped off by back-to-back three-point makes from Christie and Jordan Gonzalez. However, the Valiants' large lead was too much to overcome late in the game and Manhattanville grabbed the 75-52 conference victory.
The Devils will return to action on Saturday, February 13 for a road conference match against the DeSales University Bulldogs slated for 3 p.m.
