MIAMI, Fla. (December 20, 2016) -- With the score tied three times and six different lead swaps, the Fairleigh Dickinson University women's basketball team defeated Lehman College, 74-65, in their final game of the HoopMIA Division III Holiday Tournament in Miami, Fla.
The Devils are now 6-2 as the Lightning dropped to 3-5.
With just 3:29 left in the contest, the score was nearly tied with the Devils leading by one at 65-64. That's when a layup from senior
Rachel Groom kicked off four-straight scoring plays from the Devils. Groom's solid performance put her just one point away from a double-double with nine rebounds and 15 points.
Freshman
Taiah Thornton made her third steal of the night with 2:16 left on the clock and widened the Devils' lead to 69-64 with a fastbreak layup.
Thornton then scored an insurance three-pointer to hold off a Lehman College comeback.
Senior
Alyssa McDonough played a key role in the Devils' victory, going 5-for-12 and notching a double-double with 14 rebounds and 11 points while freshman
Kendrea Williams contributed 17 points.
The Lighting were led by a huge performance from Lynda Fields who finished with a game-high of 26 total points.
FDU-Florham is back in action in the Jamie Lynn Roberts DC Holiday Classic on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. against the College of Saint Benedict in Washington, D.C.
