Rachel Groom became the 15th player in FDU women's basketball to score 1,000 career points, but the Devils fell to Stevenson 68-61 Saturday.
A Mustang (2-1) layup gave the hosts a 16-9 lead but FDU (2-2) countered with the next five, making the contest a one possession game. The hosts responded with five of the next seven to give Stevenson a five point edge going into the second period. The Devils began the second with a 15-0 spurt, capped off with trey from freshman
Taiah Thornton. The rally gave the visitors a 10 point lead, their largest of the afternoon.
The Mustangs however showed resilience, and ended the half on a 9-2 run and entered the break trailing by one point. Groom led the Devils with 10 points and nine rebounds in the first half. Stevenson picked up a six point lead in the third quarter, but an 11-1 rally by FDU once again put the visitors in front. A Mustang layup with 1:24 gave SU a one point advantage heading into the fourth and final frame.
Groom hit the milestone with 3:17 remaining in the period, which trimmed the Devils deficit down to two points. The Mustangs would then close out the game on a 6-1 run, hitting a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left to cap off the scoring.
Thornton added 14 points, while Groom tallied a game high 19 points and 13 boards.Senior Alyssa Mcdonough registered nine points, four rebounds and five assists in the setback.
The Devils continue their three-game road swing with a game at Moravian Tuesday evening.
