Men’s Basketball Squeaks Past Stevens

MADISON, N.J. (November 22, 2016) – The FDU men's basketball team topped in-state rival Stevens 62-60 on Tuesday night.

FDU moves to 2-2 on the season, while Stevens moved to 1-1.

The Devils used an 8-0 run to grab their lone double-digit lead of the evening, pulling in 13-3. The Ducks closed out the half with a 19-8 run, including the final three points after sophomore Anthony Mitchell hit a pair of free throws for the hosts. The Devils saw leading scorer Donte Ali in foul trouble for most of the first half, playing just 36 seconds in the stanza, yet still held a 27-22 rebounding edge.

Ali hit a free throw at the beginning of the first half to tie things at 35, and neither side could grab more than a five-point lead throughout the final 20 minutes. A Duck three-pointer gave the visitors a five-point lead with 7:35 to go, but FDU responded with a 9-0 run, capped off with a layup from sophomore Darren Davy.

The Ducks went back ahead on a layup from senior Evan Klimchak, but freshman Timar Brown canned a corner three pointer to switch the score in favor of FDU. Ali hit a pair from the charity stripe with 1:31 left, but Klimchak hit a layup with 36 ticks left to make it a one-score game. With three seconds left and a chance to tie, Stevens was whistled for an offensive foul which ended the comeback hopes.

Sophomore Derek Leohner and Davy led the way with 12 points each, with Davy notching a double-double with 12 rebounds. Mitchell chipped in eight along with junior Steve Herdman, as Brown added seven points off the bench.

The Devils continue their homestand with a 7 p.m. tip against Union on December 1.
