MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham University men's soccer team surged past the visiting Eastern University Eagles Saturday, Oct. 15, winning the Middle Atlantic Conference match up, 3-0, at the Florham Campus grass fields.
The victory was made even sweeter as the team honored their nine seniors for Senior Day.
The Devils controlled the match for most of the 90 minutes, holding Eagles to just two shots on goal for the game.Â
But it was the visitors who got on the board first. In the third minute, Eastern sophomore midfielder Colin Furlong picked up the ball outside the box after a blocked cross and and sent a swerving ball to the left of the Devils' keeper and into the net.Â
FDU-Florham responded two minutes later. A neat bit of passing saw senior midfielder AJ Carnevale laying the ball off to sophomore forward Jose Guardado, who's left foot guided the ball into the left side of the net.Â
With two minutes left in the half, the Devils would add to their lead by way of a defensive mishap by Eastern. Four defenders all let a ball bounce through the defense without clearing and FDU-Florham freshman forward Justin Estremera pick up the ball, round the keeper with ease, and place the ball neatly into the open goal.Â
Eastern had a golden opportunity to score with under a minute remaining as a forward placed a cross into the back of the Devils' net, only to have the goal called back for offsides.Â
FDU-Florham was particularly good at controlling possession and limiting Eastern's few attempts to long range efforts.Â
Eastern did come out a new team in the second half, being much more assertive than in the first half and creating a number of decent opportunities. FDU-Florham, however, remained stout defensively. The Devils stayed solid defensively long enough to regain the bulk of possession after around twenty minutes.Â
Guardado's second goal of the day sealed the game for the Devils. Carnevale crossed the ball towards FDU-Florham junior midfielder Shawn Jennings who headed the ball down into the sophomore forwards path, finishing neatly around the Eagles' goalkeeper.Â
The win keeps FDU-Florham tied for the lead in the MAC Freedom. The Devils will be back in action this Wednesday, Oct. 19, as they host Manhattanville at 2:30 p.m. on the Florham Campus grass field.Â
