Devils fall to Bulldogs in a 3-2 heartbreaker

MADISON, NJ -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's soccer lost a heartbreaker to DeSales University in a Middle Atlantic Conference match up on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils fell to 4-5-3 on the season (0-1 MAC Freedom) as the Bulldogs improved to 6-6 (1-0 MAC Freedom).

The Bulldogs struck early, as Isabel McPeak fired a shot over goalie Annie George's head for an early goal at 2:01.

With just 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Devils found a way to tie it up when a Bulldogs defender deflected the ball into their own net off a corner from senior midfielder Brittni Calleo to leave the half tied at 1-1.

FDU-Florham came out hot in the second and grabbed the lead on a successful penalty kick from Calleo.

However, that was short-lived as the Devils allowed an own goal about three minute later to tie the game, 2-2.

On defense, Ashley Granato played a key role keeping the Devils within reach by kicking the ball off the goal line for a defensive save in the 61st minute.

A few minutes later, the Bulldogs received a penalty shot opportunity but George dazzled with another big save to hold the tie.

As regulation time came to a close, DeSales stopped the match from entering overtime with a goal from Angelica Bertola off of Jess Wetherhold's corner with 54 seconds remaining on the clock to seal the victory.

George stood tall for FDU-Florham, making nine saves in the contest.

The Devils return to non-conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 against the College of Staten Island at 1 p.m.
