MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham volleyball team dropped its first Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom match of the season 3-1 to King's College at the Ferguson Recreation Center on Wednesday night.
After dropping the first set 25-19, the Monarchs (13-4, 1-2 MAC Freedom) rallied to win the next three sets 25-21, 25-23, and 27-25. Prior to tonight's loss, the Devils (14-4, 2-1 MAC Freedom) had won 13 of their last 14 matches.
Melissa Gaffney totaled 15 kills and Kristin Wong added 10 putaways to lead the Devils in the loss. Wong added 16 digs and 22 assists, while FDU-Florham setter
Codi Inloes-Williams handed out 24 assists on the night.
The Monarchs' defense was the difference led by
Rachel Miller's 28 digs. Several long rallies were kept alive by Miller's strong back row play. She also tied teammate
Katelyn Shifflett with a match-high 16 kills in the victory.
Overall, it was an evenly played match by both sides with the Monarchs posting a .169 hitting percentage to the Devils .158 attack percentage.
The fourth and final set was the most dramatic of the match. After the Monarchs took a 22-18 lead,
Lauren Harris helped serve the Devils back into the set at 22-21. The two teams traded points until an attack error followed by a
Sarah Hof kill pulled the Devils even at 24-24.
Miller and
Melissa Gaffney each recorded a kill before Miller finished the 26
th point and a long rally ended in the Monarchs' favor for the 27
th and game-winning tally.
The Devils will host the MAC Crossover Tournament this weekend, with first match set for 10 a.m. against Alvernia University.
