Florio's Long Strike Gives Devils 2-1 Victory Over Warriors

MADISON, N.J. – Freshman Gabriella Florio's first collegiate goal was a memorable one as the freshman's top-shelf score in the 54th minute gave the FDU-Florham women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Lycoming College on Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

From 20-yards out, Florio sent a blast that snuck just below the crossbar and over the outstretched hand of Lycoming goalkeeper Helen Ross' resulting in the game-winning strike.

With the win, the Devils (5-4) snapped the Warriors' (6-3) four-game winning streak.

FDU-Florham outshot Lycoming 11-8 overall and 8-2 in shots on goal in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Annie George only made one save in the win but had a busy afternoon continuously sending long defensive clear outs to midfield. George and the Devils backline prevented the Warriors from attempting a single corner kick.

The Devils got on the board first when Nicolette VanDuysen delivered a defense-splitting through ball, which reached Marissa Salava in stride. Salava gathered the pass and was able to fire a shot past a charging Ross for a 1-0 lead. Salava's goal, which game in the 10th minute, was her team-leading sixth of the season and her fifth in the team's last three outings.

That lead stood through intermission, however, in the 53rd minute, MAC Commonwealth leading scorer Meghenn Jackson received a long through ball from teammate Jordan Lazarich and managed to narrowly remain onside long enough.  With only George to beat, Jackson promptly deposited the equalizer into the back of the net.

But the Devils wasted no time retaking their lead. At the 54:53 mark, Florio picked up a loose ball 20-yards away from the goal and immediately sent it toward net for what proved to be the winning score.

Up next for the Devils is another MAC Commonwealth opponent in Albright College. The Devils head to Reading, Pa. to take on the Lions this Tuesday, September 29 at 7 p.m.
