MADISON, N.J. – With the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights playing a man down, the FDU-Florham women's soccer team was able to take advantage and cruise to a 4-0 victory on Wednesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.
The Devils (2-0) had four players put their name in the scoring column in the home opener, including senior Kelly Roche, who got things started midway through the first half by firing a shot into the back of the net on a breakaway.
Following the Roche score, Gabby Diaco and Kristen Fila checked into the game and immediately they looked to attack. The ball flew into the box on a cross and Diaco headed it in the direction of the net, but it hit off the top crossbar and ricocheted back into play. Fila then stepped up towards the ball and tapped it in for the goal.
The Devils allowed just one shot from the Gothic Knights (0-2) in the first half. However, in the second half, the defense tightened up even more and FDU-Florham dominated possession of the ball, not allowing NJCU to attempt another shot.
The Gothic Knights' goalie, Cassie Lubonski, was busy all night, but she managed to total 15 saves despite her team being outnumbered.
With the ball constantly on the Gothic Knights' side of the field, the Devils were able to work the ball from side to side and get some quality looks at the net.
Playing with an aggressive mindset for majority of the game, Diaco was finally rewarded midway through the second half. Sophomore Missy Quinn sent a cross into the box from the right side of the field and Lubonski tried to make a diving save, but the ball ended up right in front of Diaco and she kicked the ball into the net for the score.
Holding onto a 3-0 lead, the Devils added one more insurance goal late in the second half when freshman Kate MacMillan netted her first collegiate goal by ripping a shot past Lubonski.
The Devils held the Gothic Knights to just one total shot in the contest. Meanwhile, the Devils offense looked sharp as they totaled 34 shots.
The Devils will be back in action on Sunday, September 6, as they travel to Mahwah, N.J. for a nonconference clash with Ramapo College at 1 p.m.
