MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham women's soccer team was defeated 5-0 by the No. 25-ranked Montclair State University Red Hawks on Wednesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.
The Devils (3-3) were put to the test, going up against a ranked opponent and ultimately they came up short, unable to penetrate past the Red Hawks' (5-1) stingy defense.
Montclair St. got things started in the 8th minute when Tyler Madison curved the ball from the right side of the field over the Devils' goalie, Annie George, for the score.
In the 28th minute, junior Brittni Calleo took a shot at the Red Hawks' goal, but it was saved by Erinne Finlayson. That Calleo shot was the only scoring opportunity the Devils had in the first half of play.
As the Red Hawks controlled the ball, they worked their way into Devils' territory and Janae Geonnetti sent a cross into the box from the right side that was kicked in for a goal by Sophie Calverley.
Before the first half came to close, Montclair St. was threatening to score again and with the ball loose in the box, Stefanie Gomes placed the ball into the back of the net to put her team up 3-0.
In the 58th minute, the Red Hawks had the ball in front of the Devils' net after a corner kick. As the ball soared into the box, the ball was shot three times in a row and all three came up short. However, on the following corner kick, Geonnetti took a shot and it ricocheted back into play. Jennie Hornstra then charged the ball for the Red Hawks and sent it into the back of the net.
With a 4-0 lead, the Red Hawks managed to add one more goal late in the game when a cross came into the box from Gomes and Calverley shot it past George.
The Devils will be back in action on Saturday, September 19 at 4 p.m. when they travel to New York to take on The City College of New York.
