New York – The FDU-Florham women's soccer team erupted for six goals as they trumped the City College of New York 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at Randall's Island.
The Devils (4-3) offense was in complete control as they outshot the Beavers (0-5-1) 52-1 in the contest. Leading the charge for FDU-Florham was sophomore forward Marissa Salava, who netted four shots and set the school record for goals scored in a single game.
Within the first 15 minutes of action, the Devils had attempted 10 shots but were unable to score. However, in the 17th minute, Missy Orlando sent the ball into the box and Salava tipped it in for her first score of the afternoon.
Several minutes later, the Devils found themselves near the Beavers' net and junior Ashley Granato scored on an assist from senior Kelly Roche.
Following the Granato score, the Devils regained possession and Salava looked to score again. After taking two shots that were saved by the Beavers' goalie, Marissa Olsen, the sophomore forward got another chance and she capitalized by firing the shot into the back of the net.
Despite allowing six goals, Olsen recoreded 22 saves in the game.
Before the first half came to a close, senior Mary Kate Whalen got a hold of the ball and floated it over a couple of defenders and it soared past Olsen to put the Devils up 4-0.
The second half played out just as smooth as the first for the Devils as they continued to attack on the offense end.
In the 61st minute, Whalen kicked the ball over to the left side of the box, where Salava collected it and rifled it in for the score to complete her hat trick.
As the second half was winding down, Salava netted her fourth goal of the game off of an assist from Justine Fernandez.
The Devils will return to Madison on Tuesday, September 22 for a showdown with The College of New Jersey that is set to start at 7 p.m.
