WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore
Marissa Salava's goal in the 92
nd minute gave the FDU-Florham women's soccer team a 1-0 overtime victory over William Paterson University on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils (3-2) played the Pioneers (2-2-1) to an even draw for the full 90 minutes before Salava was finally able to break through with the game's decisive goal.
After a 40-minute lightning delay in the second half, the two teams trotted back onto the field with 9:13 to play but were unable to find the back of the net in regulation.
Two minutes into the extra period, the Devils earned a free kick just outside of the box. Sophomore forward
Justine Fernandez delivered a lofty pass toward the right side of the net and Salava promptly sent it past William Paterson goalkeeper
Kat Clint for the winning score.
The Devils backline of
Kelly Roche,
Missy Orlando,
Mary Kate Whalen, and
Missy Quinn had a stellar day and continuously denied the Pioneers' scoring chances.
FDU-Florham junior netminder
Annie George made two saves to earn the victory, while her counterpart Clint collected four saves.
The Devils were outshot 8-6 in the contest, however, managed to put more shots on target with a 5-3 advantage.
Next up for FDU-Florham is another New-Jersey foe. The Devils host Montclair State University this Wednesday, September 16 at 7 p.m.
