Fernandez's Early Strikes Lead Devils to 4-0 Victory

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The FDU-Florham women's soccer team's 2015 campaign began with a flurry as they rolled to a comfortable 4-0 victory over SUNY Old Westbury in the season opener on Tuesday afternoon.

The Devils (1-0) received a breakout performance from second-year midfielder Justine Fernandez, who ignited the offense with two goals in the first ten minutes of play.

In total, FDU-Florham dominated possession and outshot Old Westbury 25-6 in the contest.

Fernandez wasted no time netting her first goal of the season. At the 7:33 mark, the sophomore midfielder knocked in a cross from freshman Carly Bresney and gave the Devils a 1-0 advantage.

Two minutes later, Fernandez struck again when forward Kristina Ragolia delivered a perfect feed, which was swiftly buried with one touch from Fernandez.

The pace settled in and the Devils maintained their two-goal edge until the 80th minute when freshman midfielder Danielle Matos scored the first goal of her collegiate career by firing a rebound past the Panthers goalkeeper.

Junior forward Gabby Diaco capped the afternoon with a breakaway goal in the 88th minute thanks to a dish from Ashley Granato, which closed out the 4-0 win. FDU-Florham junior goalkeeper Annie George only needed to make two saves to earn the shutout victory and was aided by some stellar defensive play.

Old Westbury goalkeeper Melissa Muller made eight stops in the loss.

The Devils return to Madison for their home opener tomorrow, September 2 at 7 p.m. against New Jersey City University.
