MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team went on an offensive tear Friday afternoon and cruised to a 14-2 victory over the Ramapo College Roadrunners at Robert T. Shields Field.
This was the third consecutive game that the Devils (7-3, 1-0 Freedom) offense eclipsed double digit scoring as a team. Against the Roadrunners (2-3, 0-0 NJAC), the Devils had six different players in the scoring column. They were led by senior Courtney Rendinaro (Hillsborough, N.J.) who tied her season-high with five goals. She has totaled 155 goals during her career thus far and has now become one of the top five all-time leading scorers in FDU-Florham history.
The Devils went to work early and with sophomore Joelle Manganella (Kenvil, N.J.) hanging around behind the net, she found a streaking Brienna Reasoner (Flemington, N.J.) who rifled the ball past the Ramapo goalie. Manganella showcased great vision on the offensive end dishing out three assists to go along with her two goals.
A few minutes later, the Devils were awarded a free position shot and sophomore Noelle Shirey (Pine Beach, N.J.) capitalized with a goal. Less than a minute later, Rendinaro scored her first goal of the game to give the Devils an early 3-0 lead.
The Devils continued to add to their lead and after a missed free position shot, Rendinaro found the ball and dished it to Manganella who punctuated the possession with her first goal of the afternoon. Rendinaro went on to score the next two Devils goals.
Following a Ramapo turnover, the Devils got control of the ball and this time it was Caitlyn McGinley (Mount Laurel, N.J.) who found the back of the net to extend the Devils' lead to seven. The seniors, McGinley and Rendinaro, each scored two more goals in the first half. McGinley's three goals were a season-high and she showed great efficiency on the field, taking three shots and scoring on all three.
Holding on to an 11-0 lead entering the second half, the Devils did not let up and after a successful clear, this time it was Reasoner who found a streaking Manganella for the goal. The Devils added another goal with around 20 minutes left to play when Manganella delivered the ball to Shirey and she fired the shot to the back of the net.
It was not until midway through the second half that the Roadrunners were able to score. Ramapo was awarded a free position shot and Lindsay Hughes got the Roadrunners on the board by sending the ball past Nina Andersen (Robbinsville, N.J.). The Roadrunners added one more goal in the game when Alyssa Tachon scored on a free position shot.
With less than three minutes left to play, the Roadrunners turned the ball over on their own side of the field and Lauren DeBetta (St. James, N.Y.) got the ball in front of the net and scored her first collegiate goal.
Behind the tremendous offensive outburst by the Devils was a flawless performance from senior goalie Grace Warburton (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.), who posted her second shutout on the season, racking up eight saves in the game.
The Devils will be back in action on Monday, April 6, as they head to Drew University to take on the Rangers in the Battle for Madison Ave at 4 p.m.
