CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The FDU-Florham men's lacrosse team came from one-goal down in the second half to defeat DeSales University 10-8 in their Freedom Conference opener on Thursday afternoon.
The Devils (5-4, 1-0 Freedom) received two-goal efforts from
David Stewart (Narbeth, Pa.),
Daniel Minnich (Laurys Station, Pa.), and
Jake Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J.) and extended their winning streak to three games with the win.
Stewart buried an assist from
Nick Ardolino (Florham Park, N.J.) with 49 seconds to play in the opening half and pulled the Devils even at 5-5 entering the break.
After DeSales'
Joe Neggia put the home team ahead again early in the second half, Higgins netted an man-advantage score to tie the game with 6:02 remaining in the third quarter. Less than two minutes later, despite playing two-men down due to penalties, Neggia put the Bulldogs (3-5, 0-1 Freedom) in front once more with his 12
th goal of the season.
However, the Devils remained undeterred and Stewart finished a helper from
Matt Melnik (Clifton, N.J.), which was followed up by a
Dan Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) strike that put FDU-Florham on top entering the fourth period.
The Devils refused to relinquish their advantage and netted the first two goals of the final quarter. Minnich scored off of Melnik's second assist of the day before sophomore
Dan Decker (East Setauket, N.Y.) took a feed from Minnich and netted a game-sealing score with 3:31 to go.
Minnich's two goals give him a team-best 14, just ahead of Higgins and Stewart who have 12 goals apiece on the campaign.
Sophomore midfielder
Dalton Rimmer (Vernon, N.J.) won 13-of-22 face-offs and had an active afternoon with eight ground balls for FDU-Florham.
The Devils return to action next Wednesday, April 8 when they visit Delaware Valley College at 4 p.m.
