Evans' Last-Second Save Seals Thrilling Victory for Men's Lacrosse

MADISON, N.J. – As the final horn sounded, FDU-Florham goalkeeper Conner Evans (Ringwood, N.J.) covered up King's senior A.J. Bungert's game-tying attempt and the Devils came away with a thrilling 10-9 victory over King's College on Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

With the win, the Devils (7-4, 3-0 Freedom), who were playing their first home game of the season after an inclement-weather filled season-to-date, remain unbeaten in conference play and extend their winning streak to five games.

FDU-Florham junior attack Daniel Minnich (Laurys Station, Pa.) led the Devils with three goals, including the game-winner with 1:53 remaining.

Senior midfielder Jake Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J.) got the Devils on the board first by burying his 16th goal of the season just over two minutes into action. With 8:09 left to play in the opening quarter, Minnich followed by finishing an assist from Peter Biondi (Buffalo, N.Y.) and gave the Devils a 2-0 lead.

Led by back-to-back goals from sophomore Mike DiCarlo, the Monarchs (4-6, 1-2 Freedom) responded with three unanswered strikes to take a one-goal lead late in the first period. But FDU-Florham's Dalton RImmer (Vernon, N.J.) pulled the home team even by netting an unassisted strike with just eight ticks left in the quarter.

Rimmer's goal gave the Devils a boost as FDU-Florham surged into the second quarter with the first two goals. Dave Magrini (Montclair, N.J.) scored the first, before red-hot senior Nick Ardolino (Florham Park, N.J.) picked up the second. Ardolino finished with three goals for the second-straight game and now has 13 tallies on the season.

Once again, the Monarchs responded by netting the final three goals of the quarter and held a slim 6-5 advantage heading into the break.

The neck-and-neck battle continued through the third period as Minnich and Ardolino sandwiched a Brock Johnson goal and the game entered the final quarter knotted at 7-7.

After Monarchs junior Evan Lawshe put King's in front with a goal, Ardolino and Higgins each netted unassisted strikes, which gave the Devils a 9-8 edge.

Following a Monarchs' timeout, Bungert broke loose for the game-tying goal with 5:20 left to play in regulation.

With each team frantically fighting for possession, the Devils forced a turnover and took a timeout with 2:25 to go. The Devils settled into their offense and a patient possession resulted in the game-winner at 1:53 when Ardolino found Minnich charging the net for the winning score.

The Monarchs had won last chance, when Bungert fired from the point but Evans was up to task and calmly secured the game-sealing save. The freshman netminder made 12 stops to earn the win, while King's goalkeeper William Pokorny made nine saves in defeat.

Evans was aided by the stellar defense of Dan Decker (East Setauket, N.Y.) and Biondi, who totaled four caused turnovers and frustrated the Monarchs' attack through most of the afternoon.

The Devils head back on the road in their next contest before closing the regular season with two conference home games. FDU-Florham will take on Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. this Wednesday April 15 at 7 p.m.
