HILLBURN, N.Y. -- The FDU-Florham men's lacrosse team jumped out to a three-goal lead and never looked back, en route to a 13-6 victory over Dominican College on Wednesday evening at Torne Valley Complex.
Senior midfielder
Nick Ardolino (Florham Park, N.J.) led the charge for the Devils (3-4) with a game-high three goals.
Despite the two sides firing nearly the same amount of shots (38-36), the Devils' shooting proved to be more accurate as FDU-Florham put 26 shots on net compared to Dominican's 15.
Senior
Jake Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J.) launched the first strike by finishing an assist from
Matt Melnik (Clifton, N.J.) less than three minutes into action.
Dan Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) and Ardolino followed with unassisted scores and the Devils had a 3-0 lead with 6:34 to go in the opening period.
Leading 3-1, Ardolino countered the Chargers' first goal with his second of the day, an unassisted score 1:03 into the second quarter. After Dominican's
Ryan Wilerby scored on a man-up opportunity, the Devils pushed their lead to 6-2 with goals by Melnik and
Dave Magrini (Montclair, N.J.).
The Devils took their 6-3 halftime advantage and broke the game open by scoring four-unanswered goals in the third quarter. Higgins, Ardolino and Magrini registered their goals in the first five minutes, then freshman
Will Kenny (Gladstone, N.J.) netted his first collegiate score with 3:49 left.
The two teams each scored three times in the final quarter, which resulted in the 13-6 final. Higgins finished with two goals, two assists, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers in the win. The senior now leads the team with 10 goals on the season.
FDU-Florham freshman
David Stewart (Narbeth, Pa.) scored twice for the second game in a row, while fellow first-year
Daniel Loureiro Jr. (Freehold, N.J.) scored the first goal of his young career on his lone shot attempt in the contest.
Devils goalkeeper
Conner Evans (Ringwood, N.J.) made eight stops to earn the victory.
Wilerby paced the Chargers (1-5) with two goals and three ground balls in the loss.
The Devils return to action when they head to Rosemont College this Friday, March 27 at 4 p.m.
