MADISON, N.J. – For the third-straight season, the FDU-Florham women's basketball team will be the top-seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament. The No. 3 Devils (24-1, 13-1 Freedom) locked up the regular-season title by defeating the Delaware Valley College Aggies (13-12, 8-6 Freedom) 89-52 on Saturday afternoon at Ferguson Recreation Center.
Prior to the game, the team's five seniors –
Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.),
Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J.),
Quaneshia Harris (Trenton, N.J.),
Leigh-Ann Lively (Bangor, Pa.), and
Delisha Thompson (East Orange, N.J.) were honored for their outstanding four-seasons in Madison.
It was a senior-laden effort that propelled FDU-Florham to victory on Saturday. Thompson logged a season-high 24 minutes and tied fellow fourth-year Devil
Kara Dayon for a team-best 16 points in the contest. In addition, Thompson notched her first double-double of the season in her final regular season game.
The Devils will host Delaware Valley in the Freedom Conference Semifinals this Wednesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. For the second-straight season, these two teams finished up with a regular-season tilt, only to be matched up four days later in the postseason tournament.
On Saturday, Delaware Valley could not have scripted a better start to the game. The Aggies registered the first eight points of the game and led 11-2 three minutes into play. With 9:16 to go, a layup by
Kacy Peyton gave the Aggies a 12-point lead, 26-14.
Delaware Valley seemed to answer every FDU-Florham basket throughout the stanza but the Devils surged into the locker room by netting the final seven points of the half to take a 34-33 edge into the break. Sophomore guard
Alyssa McDonough's (Parlin, N.J.) three-ball with 15 seconds left ignited the home crowd.
That momentum continued through the start of the second period as the home team ran off an 11-2 spurt to gain control of the contest. A trio of seniors, Lively and the Dayon sisters, each buried a trey over that span.
From that point on, the Devils had their way and raced to the finish, en route to the 37-point victory.
Lively finished with 13 points and three rebounds, while junior forward
Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J.) double-doubled for the fifth-straight game by hauling in 17 rebounds with 14 points.
After shooting over 48 percent from the field in the first half, the Aggies managed only 24 percent in the final 20 minutes.
Eireann Anastasi led all scorers with 17 points and added six rebounds and five assists.
Following the game, Head Coach
Marc Mitchell said, "I was really pleased with our effort today. I believe that our kids are ready for the postseason. We have a new focus."
