MADISON, N.J. -- In a game to honor the senior members of the FDU-Florham men's basketball team, the Devils were defeated by the Delaware Valley College Aggies 73-69 Saturday afternoon at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
The Devils (2-23, 1-13 Freedom) stepped onto the court one final time with their two senior guards, Kevin Furlong (Hazlet, N.J.) and Tymiak Hawkins (Philadelphia, Pa.). Looking to go out with a win in their last game in a Devils uniform, the two looked like seniors, showcasing their leadership on the court.
The Aggies (16-10, 10-4 Freedom), who were looking to secure their seeding in the Freedom Conference Tournament, got off to a quick 5-0 start. However, FDU-Florham did not back down and was up for the challenge, answering every basket made by Delaware Valley.
In the second half, the Devils maintained control of the lead with freshman guard Steve Herdman (South Amboy, N.J.) and Hawkins knocking down several jump shots. This was Hawkins' fourth straight game scoring in double digits as he finished the contest with a game-high 15 points. Herdman added 14 points and four assists.
With 11:23 remaining in the game, the Devils had a seven point advantage. However, the Aggies responded with an 18-5 run to recapture the lead and all of the momentum. Junior guard Zach Sly used his quickness to maneuver around the Devils defense and get to the basket in the second half for 11 points. The Aggies also utilized the long ball and found their sharp shooter, Jay Donovan, who buried four 3-pointers in the second half and finished the game with a team-high 13 points.
The Devils worked to climb back into the game and with just over three minutes to play, Hawkins connected on a 3-point shot. Two minutes later, the Devils were at it again, but this time it was freshman guard Ryan Rigby (Bristol, Pa.) burying a shot from beyond the arc to tie the game up at 64-64 with a minute left to play.
Looking to break the tie, the Aggies marched down the court and found Donovan who sank his fourth 3-pointer of the afternoon to give Delaware Valley a three point advantage. The Devils made one last push after Furlong netted a deep 3-point shot to cut the deficit to two, but the Aggies successfully warded off the attack by knocking down their foul shots to close out the game and secure the victory.
As Furlong walked off the court, the crowd rose to their feet to applaud the senior for his illustrious four year career with the Devils. He concluded the game with eight points, 12 rebounds and four assists.Â
