HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham men's lacrosse team suffered a 16-5 defeat to Stevens Institute of Technology in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Despite the game being played at Stevens, the Devils (0-1) were the home team since the game had to be relocated due to weather conditions at FDU-Florham's Robert T. Shields Field.
In the loss,
Frank Reda (Hauppuge, N.Y.) became the 33rd FDU-Florham men's lacrosse player to join the 100-point club, as Reda scored two goals on the afternoon.
After four and a half minutes of scoreless play, Stevens'
Tim Leahey opened the scoring by firing a rocket past Devils freshman goalkeeper
Conner Evans (Ridgewood, N.J.) Evans was under siege for most of the contest and the Ducks (1-0) fired 28 of their 55 attempts over the first two quarters.
At the 7:46 mark of the first period, freshman attack
David Stewart (Narbeth, Pa.) made it a 2-1 game by notching the Devils' first goal of the season and the first of his career off of a feed from
Daniel Minnich (Laurys Station, Pa.). Stewart added a second goal later on and Minnich picked up right where he left off last season, as the junior led FDU-Florham with 21 helpers in 2014.
Following Stewart's goal, the Ducks exploded for seven-unanswered scores, which sent them into the break with a comfortable 9-1 advantage.
Jake Krantz concluded the first-half scoring by sending a shot into the back of the cage with 1:51 to go in the second quarter.
Stevens outshot the Devils 28-7 over the first 30 minutes of action and held a 10-2 advantage in face-offs.
The Devils netted the first two goals of the second half when Reda finished an assist from
Dan Decker (East Setauket, N.Y.) and
Frank Salustri (Yonkers, N.Y.) notched an unassisted strike for his first collegiate goal, which brought the Devils within six at 9-3. However, the Ducks erased those two goals with two more before the period's end.
Trailing 11-3, Reda registered the Devils first score of the fourth quarter but the Ducks tacked on five more to finalize the 16-5 victory.
Minnich finished with three assists on the day and Evans made 15 stops in his debut. Senior
Jake Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J.) took four shots and corralled four ground balls in the loss.
The Ducks dominated time of possession and outshot the Devils 55-25. Stevens junior midfielder
Brett Incolingo won 18-of-22 face-offs and added seven ground balls to his ledger in the victory.
FDU-Florham will battle cross-street rival Drew University in its next outing, this Wednesday February 25 at 7 p.m.
