WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The No. 3 FDU-Florham women's basketball team rolled to a 69-47 victory over Wilkes University in Freedom Conference action on Tuesday night at the Marts Center.
For the third-straight contest,
Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J.) set the tone defensively by snagging seven steals, which complemented her 13-point, 14-rebound effort in the win. The junior forward has now totaled 22 steals over the Devils' last three outings.
After Wilkes'
Chelsea Smelas registered the first basket, FDU-Florham (23-1, 12-1 Freedom) responded with 11 straight points to grab an early nine-point lead.
The swarming Devils defense limited the Lady Colonels (10-13, 4-9 Freedom) to just 19 points in the first half on 26.9 percent shooting. Brown led the charge on the defensive end by leaping into passing lanes and creating havoc, en route to four first-half steals.
Senior guard
Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) hauled in eight rebounds with six points and the Devils held a commanding 34-19 lead at the break.
FDU-Florham wasted no time increasing its cushion out of the locker room and scored the first nine points of the second stanza, which put the nation's third-ranked team on top 43-19. Sophomore guard
Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.) capped the spurt with a pair of nifty layups, the second of which cause a Wilkes timeout.
Midway through the half, a layup and a trey by
Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) provided the Devils their largest lead of the night at 57-26. The outcome was never in doubt over the final 10 minutes as FDU-Florham coasted to its third-straight win.
McDonough and
Kara Dayon each matched Brown for the team-high with 13 points apiece. For the seventh game in a row the Devils defense caused at least 20 turnovers.
Elena Stambone paced Wilkes with 14 points on 6-for-16 shooting, while
Chelsea Brown added nine points and seven rebounds in the loss.
The Devils will wrap up regular-season play in their next contest when they host Delaware Valley College this Saturday, February 21 at 1 p.m.
