BRONX, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's basketball team suffered a tightly-contested 59-56 loss to The College of New Jersey at the CUNY Coaches vs Cancer Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore guard Danielle Leguillou led all scorers with 18 points, while Alyssa McDonough filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists in the loss.
The two teams matched each other in most of the statistical categories but the Lions' (4-6) 46 percent shooting clip outdueled the Devils' (7-4) 38.2 percent performance.
TCNJ doubled-down on the Devils' two main post threats Rachel Groom and Shalette Brown and limited the duo to 8-of-21 combined from the floor. Groom and Brown each finished with 10 points on the afternoon.
The Devils got off to a sluggish start and trailed 11-2 with two minutes to go in the first quarter before a corner trey by Fernanda Reyes and a pair of free throws from McDonough helped get the offense on track. However, the Lions led 13-7 through one period of play.
McDonough opened the second quarter with a nifty layup, which set off the Devils on a 10-0 run to open the frame. Brown scored six points during the spurt and FDU-Florham nabbed a 17-13 lead at the midway point.
Leguillou sparked the second quarter offense with seven of her nine first half points but a 3-pointer by TCNJ guard Cindy Napolitano in the closing seconds pushed the Lions in front 30-29 at the break. Napolitano flustered the Devils with her long-range shooting and finished with 11 points in just four minutes of first half action, thanks to three treys.
The game remained tight through the third quarter and a trey by McDonough briefly put the Devils in front with one minute to go but the Lions captured a 44-42 after a 3-point play by Kim Dana in the final seconds of the period.
With just under two minutes to go, McDonough beat the shot block with a long 3-pointer, which brought the Devils within one, 54-53. But the Lions answered with a trey of their own and regained a four-point lead four with 56 seconds remaining in regulation.
On the Devils' next possession, Leguillou buried a 3-pointer and then Brown grabbed a crucial steal with 18 seconds to go. Out of a timeout, Brown earned a quality look under the basket but her go-ahead layup rimmed out and the Lions held on for the victory.
Jess Lynch joined Napolitano as the only other Lion to reach double figures with 10 points in the win.
The Devils conclude the CUNY Coaches vs Cancer Tournament with the consolation game tomorrow at 12 p.m. against College of St. Elizabeth.
